A Philippine fuel tanker partially sank in Philippine waters on February 28, officials said, as Manila struggled to contain a diesel spill several kilometers long.

The Philippine Coast Guard said that the Princess Empress was carrying 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil from Bataan province (near the capital Manila) to Iloilo province in the central region when its engine overheated. Initial investigations showed the vessel drifted toward waters off Balingawan Point on Mindoro Island "due to rough seas until it was half-submerged."

The Coast Guard said it was monitoring the diesel spill, but did not detect at sea any industrial fuel oil from the ship's depot. Another ship saved 20 crew members on the Princess Empress. The Coast Guard said the boats were in "good physical condition."

In a separate update, the coast guard said the spill was discovered near the wrecked ship 5 kilometers long and 500 meters wide. An oil spill prevention device will be installed to control this incident.
